Independent Living Skills (ILS) Instructor

  • Title: Independent Living Skills Instructor

    Company: Community Enrichment Services, LLC

    Reports To: Program Director

    Location: Hybrid (Home and Community-Based Settings in San Leandro, CA 94577 and surrounding areas)

    Pay Rate: From $20.00 per hour

    Job Types: Part-time and Full-time positions available

    Expected Hours: 5 - 40 hours per week, with day, evening, and weekend shifts as needed.

  • Our Independent Living Services Program utilizes person-centered thinking to develop services tailored to each individual's unique needs. As an ILS Instructor, you will provide one-on-one instruction and support to individuals with developmental disabilities in their homes and within the community. You will assist individuals in making informed choices, promote self-determination, help them set and achieve meaningful goals, and facilitate access to local community resources. Your work will focus on enhancing each individual's self-worth and encouraging the establishment of meaningful relationships and life activities, ultimately helping them achieve their highest level of independence.

    • Exercise mature judgment and relate to individuals in a warm and caring manner.

    • Provide training and instruction to assigned individuals in all skills outlined in their Individual Service Plan (ISP).

    • Assist individuals in scheduling behavior training sessions and implement behavior training strategies as needed.

    • Instruct individuals, as necessary, in acceptable social behavior and other areas of training to promote positive interactions.

    • Prepare and maintain detailed notes, accurate data collection records, and behavior charts, ensuring daily review for accuracy and progress monitoring.

    • Develop a thorough understanding of each assigned individual’s medical condition and history to provide appropriate support.

    • Collaborate effectively with the community, other employees, support groups, and external agencies to ensure the individual's successful integration and participation within these settings.

    • Maintain open and effective lines of communication with individuals, fellow staff members, field supervisors, program instructors, and the Program Director.

    • Act as a valuable member of the interdisciplinary team, providing accurate and insightful input regarding assigned individuals' performance, progress, and any challenges.

    • Understand and effectively implement various behavior modification techniques to support individual growth and development.

    • Provide transportation to individuals as needed to facilitate participation in community activities, appointments, and other essential outings.

    • Attend regularly scheduled staff meetings and engage in ongoing continuing education trainings to enhance your skills and knowledge.

    • Perform other duties as assigned to support the overall success of the program and the individuals we serve.

    • Must be at least 21 years of age.

    • Possess a valid California Driver’s License.

    • Maintain current auto insurance.

    • Provide proof of vehicle registration.

    • Have past caregiving experience (personal or professional experience is a plus).

    • Successfully complete all pre-employment requirements, including in-house training and orientation.

    • Pass a comprehensive background check.

    • Possess a High School Diploma or GED.

    • Knowledge of individuals with developmental disabilities and dual diagnosis is a plus.

    • Familiarity with behavioral issues, including aggressive, non-verbal, and self-injurious behaviors is a plus.

    • Demonstrated ability to exercise mature judgment and relate to individuals in a warm, caring manner.

    • Understanding of state and federal laws, Regional Center policies, Department of Developmental Services regulations, and Titles 17 and 22 is a plus.

    • Ability to clearly speak and understand English (Bilingual in Spanish and/or the primary language of the individual assigned is a plus).

    • Strong ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.

    • Proven ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of people at all levels within the organization and in the community.

    • Self-starter with excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.

    • Results-oriented with sound judgment, a strong service orientation, and the ability to be assertive and persuasive when necessary.

    • High energy level with the ability to comfortably manage multifaceted projects and day-to-day activities.

    • Comfortable working in both indoor and outdoor settings.

    • Physical ability to frequently lift and/or carry objects/individuals up to 60 plus pounds. Requires standing, sitting, stooping, kneeling, bending, balancing, walking, running, pushing, pulling, and traveling.

    • Ability to set priorities and adapt to changing priorities effectively.

    • Superior interpersonal abilities, a strong teamwork mentality, and excellent social perceptiveness.

    • Active listening skills with the ability to interact effectively with individuals, families, and management.

    • Ability to establish credibility, be decisive, and recognize priorities.

    • Resourceful, well-organized, and detail-oriented.

    • Good reasoning abilities and sound judgment in decision-making.
